PART 2 ACUTE VIRAL RHINITIS - from Common Cold to Deadly Disease INTRODUCTION The entry of the ‘novel’ Wuhan coronavirus (SARS COV-2) into the world viral microbiome has had several far-reaching consequences. Although infection with this virus may have been no worse than severe influenza (1, 2, 3), there is now universal recognition of the potential for a viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) to develop into a severe and sometimes fatal disease. Thus, the common cold and influenza have now become conditions that both patients and healthcare practitioners take more seriously – especially in vulnerable populations (i.e., the elderly and those with co-morbidities, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease).
